PIANO
CONCERTO NO.1

I composed this
work in three movements using a simple idea and structure beginning with the
end and ending with the beginning and this is the order in which the piece
was composed.
The themes
that are heard in the final movement are disguised earlier in the work in
different harmonic and rhythmic forms.
They start in the midst of their development (reminiscent of the sonata
form) like the centre of a black hole then gradually spiral out towards colour
and light. The idea of moving ahead
towards clarity and resolution reflects the age-old notion of a transition from
darkness to light. In this, I sense an
expression of the deep concern I feel for the welfare of all that is around us,
particularly the environment, and my hope that we will rapidly learn to make the
best decisions.
I would like
to dedicate this work to my friends Adθle and Tim, for their courage and their
commitment to each other and the fortitude they have shown in the face of
incredible difficulty.
